VegNET NSW

The project

The NSW vegetable industry extension project is managed by Greater Sydney Local Land Services and has been since 2016. A significant proportion of NSW vegetable growers will have applied new learnings to make their businesses more sustainable and profitable.

Better practice will be evident in crop scheduling, irrigation efficiency, energy efficiency, soil health, pest and disease control, weed management, food safety and other key aspects of farm management. The NSW VegNET project covers key growing regions with a large range of crops grown, encompassing several Cultural and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) grower groups. These regions include Greater Sydney, North Coast and Central Tablelands. Key topics being delivered are:

  • improving water and nutrient management for NSW protected cropping vegetables,
  • pest and disease management including biosecurity and farm hygiene,
  • soil health community of practice in CaLD groups and field growers in Greater Sydney and regionally.

Partners and intended outcomes

The VegNET program consists of ten projects delivered across Australia to give vegetable growers access to the latest research and development activities to assist them to become more profitable. The VegNET 3.0 (VG21000) is funded by Hort Innovation and the project is nationally coordinated by AUSVEG and delivered “on-the ground” by regional development officers (RDOs) in 10 key vegetable-growing regions across Australia who are responsible for developing and executing regional extension plans. This investment is tasked with keeping Australian vegetable growers informed about current R&D activities, results and resources – supporting the adoption of industry best practice and bolstering vegetable productivity and profitability in key growing areas across the country. The network also gathers information on future needs for research to assist the industry.
