Buying livestock through Facebook or Gumtree? Be aware of the risks!!

Buying livestock online can be quick and simple but brings new risks. In this short video we cover some of the risks and what you need to do when buying stock online:

  • Make sure the animals you are buying are healthy. If possible hold them in yards on arrival to allow weed seeds to pass through their digestion.
  • Also, quarantine them in a separate paddock to any other stock for a month – this will give you time to observe for any diseases.
  • Make sure you have a PIC and register stock movement on the National Livestock Identification System.

Report any suspicious diseases/deaths to your Local Land Services office and if you notice anything unusual in your stock, call the 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline on 1800 675 888.

If you have any questions on buying and selling livestock, please contact your Local Land Service office.
