Additional information

I am privileged to reside in the North Coast of NSW and be a landholder here. This is a beautiful area to live in and has great potential which is still very much untapped. I would like to contribute to making this community even better by protecting and looking after what we have here and further developing these assets for the benefit of all citizens in the community. This is achievable through empowering and assisting landowners to generate and invest in the best opportunities for their properties.

Zentveld, Rebecca - Newrybar

Candidate employment or volunteer experience

Coffee grower and roaster on the Zentveld family coffee farm in the hills behind Byron Bay since 1993. Active Member of SoilCare, Northern Rivers Food and the local farming community, particularly through the Australian Grown Coffee Association as current President and executive for many years. I co-ordinate and help direct research opportunites with AgriFutures Australia, and give hundreds of hours per year in my voluntary capacity representing Australian coffee growers as President for last 5 years. The encourager and initiator, I guide our regenerative farming practices on our family farm. I am passionate about the land we look after; and actively share through tours, encouraging other landowners and potential farmers to protect and value the precious 'food bowl' land we are caretakers of - by actually producing food, and doing so with real ecological consideration. "Dont just grow big houses - grow food" in these rich and precious soils of the NSW North Coast. That is my mantra.

Candidate qualifications or professional memberships

Bachelor of Economics, University of New England. Roastmistress. No formal qualifications - just 30 years experience. Regenerative agriculture practitioner. Actively doing good by our soil, wildlife and waterways. .. I have not sought further qualifications to look after our land, soil health, waterways, and wildlife above and below the soil. I just read, listen to podcasts, watch videos of inspiring regenerative practicioners and get on with it. As well as producing beautiful quality coffee from crop to cup - as real farmers I am willing to give new ideas a go, learn through trial and practice. I have actively welcomed researchers, particularly from the local Southern Cross University to our farm; and I am the encourager and enabler, the co-ordinator of ongoing research on our farm. I actively listen, ask questions and am not afraid to say I dont understand. I don't use government speak, and will seek clarification such that issues are well understood and expressed clearly to all.

The candidate has experience in:

  • Leadership, strategic planning and management
  • Community participation, regional service delivery and working with industry, government and other partners
  • Primary industries or providing services to support this sector
  • Contemporary biosecurity programs in animal and/or plant health, pest and weed management
  • Natural resource management and biodiversity conservation

Additional information

The NSW Government Local Land Services seems very focused on cattle and livestock farming issues. That's an important sector, but there is a shortage of representation for horticulture and the more diverse smaller agri-industries that thrive most naturally in our rich volcanic soils with (mostly) abundant water and cool subtropical conditions of the NSW North Coast. Whilst coffee production is my specialty, I am also very keen to see representation for all small crops and tree crops in particular. Being active member of Northern Rivers Food and Soil Care, I have befriended like-minded food producers and believe I understand and could address issues that are most pertinent to landowners and food producers other than cattle or dairy farmers. A diversity of farmers and landowners needs diversity of LLS Board representation.
