Landholders praised for flood preparation

Local Land Services has praised the efforts of landholders along the Macquarie, Lachlan and Castlereagh systems for their diligent preparation for the recent flood events across the Central West.

Central West Local Land Services General Manager Andrew Mulligan said while floodwaters reached major levels in many areas, the proactive efforts of landholders resulted in less requests for assistance than anticipated.

“Landholders have done an outstanding job to prepare and respond to these floods and while it’s too early to determine the full extent of the damage, we’re optimistic that their planning has helped reduce the impacts,” Mr Mulligan said.

“The floodwaters may take some time to recede, but our team is still here to provide advice with evacuation or assistance with emergency care of livestock and companion animals.

“We can also support the long-term recovery process, with staff ready to assist with specialty advice on everything from horse and livestock care post flood to pasture management, cropping information, soil health and more.

“Our thoughts go out to everyone affected by this disaster, but together we can work towards recovery and I encourage any impacted landholders to call us on 1300 795 299 to lodge a request for assistance.”

Landholders are also being encouraged to report flood-related damage including stock and fodder losses, damage to crops, pastures, fencing and other farm infrastructure through the Natural Disaster Damage Survey.

The Natural Disaster Damage Survey can be filled out online at https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/emergencies/emergency/community/primary-industries-natural-disaster-damage-survey.

“This survey helps us and the NSW Department of Primary Industries determine the scale and severity of the impact these floods have had,” Mr Mulligan said.

“With a clearer picture of the situation we can then better target resources and assistance throughout the region.”

For more information and resources on flood recovery, landholders can call Local Land Services on 1300 795 299 or visit https://www.lls.nsw.gov.au/help-and-advice/emergency-and-biosecurity/floods/flood-recovery-resources.

Financial assistance is also available for eligible landholders. A full list of disaster declared Local Government Areas (LGAs) is available on the Rural Assistance Authority website https://www.raa.nsw.gov.au/disaster-assistance/declared-natural-disasters.
