Sophie Richards - Murray Bushfire Recovery Project Manager

NRM NEWS – MAY 2021 – GENERAL NEWS

Sophie Richards

Murray Local Land Services is pleased to welcome Sophie Richards to the Natural Resource Management team in the role of Bushfire Recovery Project Manager.

She is working with landholders in the Upper Murray area to deliver on-ground projects and activities aimed at protecting and enhancing targeted species following the Black Summer bushfires. As a volunteer with the NSW Rural Fire Service, Sophie saw first-hand the devastating impact Black Summer had on our communities and the natural and built environment.

“After that experience, I have an appreciation for what the area went through,” Sophie says. “Any role that allows me to work with the community and landholders is exciting to me, and this one certainly does that.”

Sophie joined Local Land Services in 2018 as the Landcare Program Officer within the NSW Landcare Program where she worked closely with local and regional Landcare Coordinators to support the delivery of Landcare priorities across the state.

Since completing an Applied Science degree in Parks, Recreation and Heritage at Charles Sturt University, Sophie has worked across North East Victoria and Southern NSW in Primary Industry and Catchment Management roles. Most recently she worked with Woolshed Thurgoona Landcare in capacity building and project management.

“I have been involved in Landcare or NRM since my teenage years and have a passion for working with the community to achieve local and broader goals,” she says.

Outside of work, Sophie is a dedicated volunteer, distributing her time between the Rural Fire Service, Landcare, The Nappy Collective, Health Hips Australia, and more.
