Conservation of TSRs

Given that travelling stock reserves (TSRs) are parcels of Crown land reserved under legislation, their conservation values are required to be recorded and reported.

Measuring the conservation value of TSRs

The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment has compiled a ‘best available’ spatial dataset on the conservation value of TSRs.

Historical data on conservation values (high, medium, low and unknown) for TSRs that are managed by Local Land Services has been compiled as part of an Environmental Trust project.

The data has been collected from reports and assessments conducted by a variety of organisations, including Local Land Services and Department of Planning, Industry and Environment - Environment, Energy and Science Group. This data is publicly available.

Here you will also find a report on the data sources used to compile the ‘best available’ spatial data set and you can also view the dataset.

TSR rapid assessment method

As part of the NSW Environmental Trust Linear Reserves Project, a rapid conservation assessment method has been developed to help assess the conservation value of TSRs.

The rapid assessment method is relatively simple and uses a three-part scoring system made up of:

  1. Conservation status (Part A)
  2. Landscape context (Part B) measures from existing spatial and data layers.
  3. Vegetation condition (Part C) that is assessed and scored in the field.

The method training package and guidelines are there to assist with statewide consistency where possible and enable key reserve management staff to undertake these assessments.

Best environment management practice Tool kit for TSRs

NSW Environmental Trust Linear Reserves Project has funded the development of a tool kit to consistently determine the conservation value of individual TSRs and identify management practices that maintain or improve biodiversity conservation outcomes.

Travelling Stock Reserves Monitoring and audit strategy

NSW Environment Trust Linear Reserves Project has funded the development of monitoring and audit strategy. The strategy provides a framework to assist Local Land Services to monitor, evaluate, report and improve TSR management outcomes.

Regional TSR Vegetation Guides

NSW Environmental Trust Linear Reserves Project has funded the development of ten regional vegetation guides. The guides describe vegetation formations, endangered ecological communities and sites managed species in each region to enable rapid assessment of the potential status of native vegetation in the field.
