Support for Sustainable Vegetable farmers

Vegetable growers are being urged to take advantage of a new four-part video series on Sustainable Vegetable Farming designed to give vegetable growers a deeper understanding of sustainable best management practices that can be implemented on their farm.

Greater Sydney Senior Land Services Officer (Agriculture and Horticulture) Matt Plunkett said the video series is a great resource and the result of topics that were identified as priorities given from vegetable growers through the VegNET program.

“Roughly 5 minutes long, each video touches on an important topic like pests and disease management, water and irrigation, soil management and farm property planning,” Matt said.

“Pests and diseases affect crop production and cost growers time and money. Growers can use a range of tactics to combat pests and diseases on their farms.

“Irrigation is essential to produce high yielding crops and an efficient irrigation system will apply the right amount of water at the right time when the crops need it.

“Soil health is critical, much like having healthy blood. Undertaking a simple soil test on an indicator paddock is a great starting point.

“And finally, Property Planning is important to enable growers to run a profitable and sustainable vegetable farming business.

Filmed at the Greater Sydney Local Land Services Demonstration Farm in Richmond Lowlands, the video series contains expert advice from LLS extension staff and technical matter experts.
