The 22nd NSW Weeds Conference kicks off in Dubbo

The 22nd NSW Weeds Conference is shaping up to be the biggest one yet, with more than 300 delegates registered for the 2023 event being held in Dubbo.
Kicking off today, Monday 7 August, the NSW Weeds Conference is regarded as the premier event to discuss weeds, latest research and ideas for managing the establishment, impact and spread of weeds. The conference is a biennially event conducted in partnership with a host council attracting hundreds of attendees from NSW and interstate.
This year the conference is partnering with Dubbo Regional Council to deliver the conference, with the organising committee excited to be welcoming attendees from across the State. Delegates represent 132 organisations and more than half of those attending being Weed Biosecurity Officers.
Jodie Lawler, Senior Land Services Officer – Regional Weeds Coordinator with Local Land Services said we have a great line of speakers, some unique functions and exciting field visits organised.
“While the majority of delegates are from NSW, there will be 27 interstate attendees representing Queensland, Victoria, Australian Capital Territory, Northern Territory and South Australia,” said Ms Lawler.
“This is a great opportunity to showcase our region and the work being done across NSW to control weeds, and with so many knowledgeable delegates in attendance, we are excited to see the positive outcomes in action,”
The conference will be conducted over 4 days in Dubbo, offering delegates a range of options to explore in and around the region. Field trips include a zoofari at Taronga Western Plains Zoo, a historical tour through Old Dubbo Goal, a visit to the Burrendong Botanic Garden and Arboretum, and delegates will have the opportunity to discover the importance of weed hygiene in machinery, drone technology and how sniffer dogs can help in the detection of weeds.
The conference will also announce the winners of the Buerckner Award, Stephenson Award, NSW Weed Industry Award, and the NSW Weed Biosecurity Taskforce Award at the gala dinner on Wednesday 9 August.
The Awards acknowledge the work of NSW Government, NSW Local Government and Community Weeds Professionals for their outstanding contribution towards protecting NSW from the impacts of weeds.
Dubbo Mayor, Mathew Dickerson said he is delighted to be welcoming attendees to the region.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to show off the incredible highlights throughout the Dubbo Local Government Area, as well as provide insight into the weeds issues faced in our region and how we tackle the issue of invasive weeds,” said Mr Dickerson.
