Local Land Services building capacity to manage and respond to emergencies
30 September 2014
NSW Minister for Primary Industries, Katrina Hodgkinson, and Member for Ballina, Don Page, have today heard how Local Land Services is building its emergency management capacity at the organisation's Board of Chairs meeting in Ballina.
Ms Hodgkinson said already in the nine months since Local Land Services began, more than 140 staff have attended emergency management training courses run by the Department of Primary Industries (DPI).
The Board of Chairs, made up of the 11 regional Chairs, provides strategic direction for Local Land Services, which offers agriculture, emergency management, biosecurity and natural resource management services to landholders and communities in NSW.
"Local Land Services is one of the NSW Government's crucial response agencies when it comes to managing biosecurity outbreaks and natural disaster emergencies," Ms Hodgkinson said.
"More than 140 staff have already completed training and Local Land Services is on track to meeting the target of 80 per cent of the 800-strong workforce undertaking emergency management training within two years.
"Local Land Services will work closely with the DPI and other agencies when emergencies strike to assist landholders and communities during natural disasters, like bushfires and floods, or disease outbreaks in plants or animals.
"NSW has an enviable biosecurity status, providing access for our food and fibre products to an impressive array of international markets – it is essential that this status is maintained.
"Local Land Services works cooperatively with the DPI, State Emergency Service and Rural Fire Service in the event of biosecurity outbreaks and emergencies, ensuring that the NSW Government has a coordinated and effective response."
Mr Page said on North Coast Local Land Services has already worked with the DPI to respond to a number of biosecurity incidents.
"If we have a biosecurity outbreak or natural disaster on the North Coast, farmers, land managers and communities can rest assured that North Coast Local Land Services is able to provide on-ground assistance," Mr Page said.
