Shorebirds of the Hunter Estuary

The Hunter estuary is recognised as the most important site for threatened shorebirds in NSW. Of special significance are the large number of migratory shorebirds that travel from the Arctic to the Hunter estuary every summer to feed.

When they arrive in early summer, they need to rebuild their energy stores for their long flight back to the Arctic and there are many things you can do to help these species continue to survive and thrive while in the Hunter estuary.

We would like to acknowledge the Hunter Bird Observers Club, National Park and Wildlife Service and Birdlife Australia. This project is supported by Hunter Local Land Services, through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.
