Help protect native species, don't take firewood from local reserves
12 Apr 2022
Central West Local Land Services is asking the community to help preserve local habitats by not taking firewood from Travelling Stock Reserves (TSRs).
The reserves are managed to protect their biodiversity as well as recreational, cultural heritage and production values, Central West Local Land Services Team Leader TSR’s Peta Holcombe said.
“TSRs are an extremely important refuge for many rare and endangered native plants. Fallen logs and standing dead wood are part of their habitat,” Ms Holcombe said.
Decaying timber and leaf litter are also important in the process of nutrient recycling back into the soil.
“We need to work together to protect and preserve these areas for our native species and for future generations to enjoy,” Ms Holcombe said.
“Taking firewood from reserves is illegal and our staff are continuously monitoring local areas,” she said.
“People have been fined when caught on our cameras removing firewood or carrying out other illegal activities such as dumping rubbish or four-wheel-driving”.
Members of the public are asked to report any illegal activity to Local Land Services on 1300 795 299, or to contact NSW Police on 131 444.
Taking note of registration numbers, descriptions, locations and dates also provides valuable information that can assist in the prosecution of offenders.
The public can apply for a permit to collect firewood from selected state forests by calling 1300 655 687 or visiting www.forestrycorporation.com.au.
