Feral pigs in the sights of local landholders in the Euston area

Landholders from the Euston and Homebush areas are better equipped to manage feral pigs following two capacity building workshops held in the first half of 2021.

The workshops, which were hosted by the Euston Regional Landcare group, focused on baiting and trapping techniques for feral pigs, with 30 landholders and a number of NSW Government agency staff attending.  

Both workshops featured a presentation from Barry Kelly from ‘Got A Bug’ who covered how to best undertake monitoring, the importance of free feeding, the best places for bait stations and traps, and an overview of relevant legislation.

In addition to what was covered in Mr Kelly’s presentation, landholders also shared knowledge and offered insights on what they are seeing on their properties and at a local level.

Western Local Land Services Regional Pest Animal Coordinator, Phil Baird, spoke highly of the two workshops and was keen to see landholders continue the momentum.

“The workshops provided a great opportunity for local landholders to come together to get the latest advice on managing feral pigs and discuss ongoing coordinated management options,” Mr Baird said.

“We all know how much of an impact feral pigs can have in a range of areas including primary production and the local environment.

“Given favourable conditions, feral pig numbers can increase dramatically in a short space of time, so it’s important we all play our part to manage feral pigs whether that be through trapping, baiting, monitoring, building landholder capacity or other means.”

To date, 275 feral pigs have been removed from the Euston Regional Landcare group project area which is 220,905 hectares.
