Learning the ropes of organic market gardening
08 Jan 2019
Budding vegetable growers will have the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of operating an organic market garden with two one-day workshops at Mangrove Mountain next month.
The workshops, run as part of the Central Coast Sustainable Farming project, will give participants information on organic market gardening with insight into marketing, equipment, crop selection, budgeting and more.
Sustainable Farming Development officer Sonia Lee said the workshops are open to existing and new market gardeners.
“Whether looking to further your knowledge or are setting up a new organic market garden business you are sure to get value out of the information that will be covered,” she said.
Workshop 1 on March 14 will cover issues around operating a small scale organic market garden including: crop selection and rotations, equipment required, soil nutrition, insect and disease management and seasonal timetables.
Workshop 2 on March 15 will cover issues around business skills for market gardeners including: marketing, pricing and selling, gross margin budgeting, profit and loss, data collection, managing cash flow and labour, time sheets, record keeping and identifying market gaps.
Both workshops will be held at Mangrove Mountain Memorial Golf Club.
Participants can choose to attend either or both workshops for a small fee.
The Central Coast Sustainable Farming Project is a partnership between Greater Sydney Local Land Services and the NSW Farmers Central Coast Horticultural Branch and is funded through the NSW Government’s Local Landcare Initiative.
