Field Day: Discover the Groundcover!

Join Andy Taylor, Senior NRM Advisor, and local botanist, Melita Milner, for a walk through some beautiful native groundcovers, where you will gain insights into the successional processes taking place and the weeds threatening to alter the natural course of succession.

Groundcovers play a critical role in protecting our soil, ensuring clean runoff into our waterways and supporting our unique biodiversity and agricultural industries. They can be grassy, full of flowers and forbs, be a mixture of woody plants and leaf litter or a lovely blanket of weeds. They are changing all the time, often slowly with the seasons but sometimes suddenly with swings in climatic conditions or following a natural disaster. Some require a lot of management and others just some periodic maintenance.

Threats at this site include the Ox-eye daisy, a beautiful flower with the capacity to dominate the ground layer, disrupting the natural order and degrading pastures. We need everyone to know what it is to avoid planting it in their gardens and accidently spreading it to new areas.

Following the walk, we’ll be revegetating a targeted area to help increase the diversity and resilience to weed invasion. All skill levels welcome as training will be provided.
